Wisdom Teeth Removal
“Wisdom teeth”are basically your third set of molars. The problem with wisdom teeth is that by the time they try to come out, they often cause a lot of problems for your other teeth. At Ashley Family Dental, we always do everything we can to help you retain your natural teeth. But we make an exception for wisdom teeth.
What You Should Expect When We Remove Your Wisdom Teeth
When you visit any of our dental clinics for wisdom teeth removal, we will offer you two options. We can remove the wisdom teeth one at a time, or we can remove all four teeth in just one visit.
With wisdom teeth removal, we will first check the condition of your teeth. If they’re causing any problems for your other teeth, we will remove them.
Before we begin, we will first need to apply local anesthesia to the area surrounding your wisdom tooth/teeth. This will numb the area so the removal of your teeth doesn’t cause any pain or discomfort at all. However, some of our patients may feel very anxious, or they may be too sensitive that local anesthesia may not be enough. In these instances, we can also use general anesthesia.
Itwould be a lot simpler if the wisdom tooth has come out of your gum line fully. If that’s the case, we willuse special dental tools to get a secure grip on the wisdom tooth and rock the tooth gently in place. When it becomes loose enough, thenwe simply lift the wisdom tooth from the gum line.
What Happens When We Don’t Remove the Wisdom Teeth?
It’s always possible that the wisdom tooth will come out and not cause any problem at all. But this rarely happens so we always recommend wisdom tooth removal to prevent any potential problems later on.
When your wisdom tooth comes out of the gum line, there may not be enough space for it so your teeth will become crowded. Moreover, they don’t always come out evenly, so your teeth will look uneven and this can affect the quality of your smile.
Your wisdom teeth may also damage nearby teeth. The emergence of the wisdom teeth can affect the nerves of your other teeth as well, and even your jawbone may sustain some damage.
In some cases, the wisdom teeth may only come out of the gum line partially. That results in a flap of gum tissue growing over it. Germs and bits of food can be trapped into this bit of gum tissue, and this will lead to infection and tooth decay.
For some people, their wisdom teeth may not even come out from the gum line at all. This can cause infection, pain, and swelling for the gum tissue. It can also damage nearby teeth and your jawbone can even deteriorate as a result.
